Building Capabilities and Capacities

Education, training, support, and awareness-raising are at the core of the capability and capacity building activities that Japan FIT/IP – Africa & LDCs contributes to and/or undertakes.


Master’s degree in Intellectual Property (MIP)

Each year selected students are granted scholarships to study MIP degrees offered jointly by WIPO and African academic institutions. Up to 10 students are selected per program: Zimbabwe | Cameroon

WIPO Summer School

Each year up to 10 selected students are granted scholarships by Japan FIT/IP – Africa & LDCs to participate in the WIPO Summer School in South Africa.

Classification standards

Training on classification standards aims to increase familiarity with existing standards and thereby enhance the capacities of national and regional IP offices to efficiently process industrial property applications.


Training on examination aims to enhance the capacity of national and regional IP offices to examine industrial property applications.


Training at Technology and Innovation Support Centers aims to enhance the capacity of researchers and inventors in Africa and LDCs to use IP information in their innovation activities.

Technology transfer

Seminars and study programs are organized to promote innovation and facilitate technology transfer based on the strategic use of intellectual property.

Human resource development

Events and activities support the development of human resources – a central component of a well-functioning IP system – in various sectors.


Branding projects are rolled out to assist communities in protecting and developing local brands through the effective use of intellectual property.
