Bringing Greater Transparency to Standard Essential Patents: New Verified SEP Data Launches in PATENTSCOPE

WIPO is unveiling a new enhancement to its global patent database, PATENTSCOPE, giving users direct access to verified standard essentiality information supplied by patent pools.

The hybrid launch event is happening February 3 at WIPO Headquarters in Geneva from 1.45 to 2.30 p.m. CET.

Laying the groundwork for broader transparency

The new feature marks an important step forward in WIPO’s work on standard essential patents (SEPs). Building on the “Declared SEPs” functionality introduced in 2025, which allows users to search for patents declared as essential to standards adopted by selected standard developing organizations, PATENTSCOPE now goes a step further by integrating essentiality verification information alongside patent records published in the database.

By integrating verified essentiality data into PATENTSCOPE, WIPO is responding to growing demand for greater transparency in the SEP ecosystem at a moment when standards and connected technologies are developing rapidly. As these technologies and the Internet of Things (IoT) continue to expand, access to clear, reliable, and easily searchable SEP-related information is becoming increasingly critical for policymakers, patent offices, innovators, and technology implementers alike.

A first step toward broader SEP data integration

This first phase of integration includes data provided by Sisvel, the first patent pool administrator to join WIPO’s voluntary industry collaboration initiative. Sisvel’s patent licensing programs rely on independent third-party evaluators to assess patent essentiality with results routinely published and regularly updated.

Making this information available through PATENTSCOPE significantly improves its visibility and usability for stakeholders worldwide. WIPO is actively working towards the inclusion of data from additional patent pool administrators.

Supporting transparency in the SEP ecosystem

SEPs underpin many of today’s most widely used technologies, from mobile communications and Wi-Fi to video compression standards. As connected technologies and the Internet of Things continue to expand, access to clear, reliable, and easily searchable SEP-related information is becoming increasingly critical for policymakers, patent offices, innovators, and technology implementers alike.
