WIPO Hosts Summer School with Huazhong University of Science and Technology

The first WIPO-Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) Summer School in Wuhan, China, was held from October 18 to 29, 2021 in a hybrid format. The summer school was co-organized by the WIPO Academy, HUST School of Management and the Sino-European Institute for Intellectual Property for the benefit of more than 100 participants from over 10 countries.

What was covered during the summer school?

The summer school focused on intellectual property (IP) and small and medium-sized enterprises, and how they can protect their IP rights in international trade. A total of 23 leading experts from different regions of the world covered a range of topics under the theme including:

  • Patent management in enterprises,
  • Measurement of patent value;
  • Artificial intelligence and IP;
  • Copyright in the cyberspace;
  • Protection of trade secrets;
  • Trademark systems in Europe;
  • Special IP regimes in the United States of America;
  • Indigenous knowledge;
  • Copyright issues in the e-commerce era; and
  • IP protection and application during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program was opened by Prof. ZHANG Xinliang, Vice President of HUST, and Mr. Joe Bradley, Head of the Academic Institutions Program at the WIPO Academy. Dr. LIU Hua, Director of the WIPO Office in China, Prof. YANG Zhi, Dean of the School of Management of HUST, and Prof. YU Xiang, Director of the Sino-European Institute for IP of HUST closed the program on October 29, 2021 echoing the points raised by participants about the usefulness of the program to their studies and future careers.
