First WIPO-CNIPA Training Course on Trademarks

WIPO in partnership with the China Intellectual Property Training Centre (CIPTC) of the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) jointly offered the first professional development training course on trademarks in Beijing from June 24 to 28, 2019.

The training course aimed at enhancing the analytical skills of senior trademark officials. Participants discussed current trademark issues of relevance to the process of examining marks. Forty-three participants from 11 countries attended. The opening ceremony was presided over by Mr. Zhao Gang, Deputy Commissioner of CNIPA, and Mr. Mario Matus, Deputy Director General of the Development Sector at WIPO.

During his stay in Beijing, Mr. Matus held discussions with senior officials in the government, which included Mr. Gan Shaoning, Deputy Commissioner of CNIPA, and Mr. Wei Baozhi, Director General of the CNIPA Patent Examination Tianjin Center. Great satisfaction was expressed by CNIPA and WIPO with their excellent cooperation particularly in the area of professional development and education.

Which topics are covered?

The training course included a study visit to CNIPA and lectures on a number of topics including:

  • The use of marks on the internet,
  • Well-known marks,
  • Trademark evaluation methods,
  • Brand management,
  • Non-traditional marks, including 3D marks, single color marks, and
  • Exercises on how to determine the likelihood of confusion between trademarks.
