Year of Version 2007 Dates Adopted: August 9, 2007 Type of Text IP-related Laws Subject Matter Trademarks, Copyright and Related Rights (Neighboring Rights), Enforcement of IP and Related Laws, IP Regulatory Body, Other Notes The South African Red Cross Society and Legal Protection of Certain Emblems Act (“the Act”) gives statutory recognition to the South African Red Cross Society as the national Red Cross Society of the Republic of South Africa, and defines its objects and functions.

The Act provides protection for the Red Cross and Red Crescent emblems in accordance with the Geneva Conventions, and requires the Ministers and the Red Cross Society to take appropriate steps to prevent any misuse of the said emblems (Sections 6, 7 & 8).
The Act impose penalties for improper use of the Red Cross and Red Crescent emblems or an imitation thereof, or words describing these emblems (Section 9(2)), and provides for seizure of any article or thing used in contravention of this Act, in accordance with Chapter 2 of the Criminal Procedure Act 1977 (Section 10).
