Independent in 1975, the Republic of Cape Verde has adopted its first Constitution on September 5, 1980, which was amended several times. The most important being the 1990 amendment, which marked the transition of the State from a single party system to a pluralist democratic system. In 1992, Cape Verde adopted a new Constitution. It was amended in 1995, 1999 and lastly, in 2010.
