Year of Version 2015 Dates Promulgated: April 13, 1959 Type of Text Main IP Laws   Subject Matter Trademarks, Geographical Indications, Trade Names Subject Matter (secondary) Enforcement of IP and Related Laws, Competition, IP Regulatory Body Notes This consolidated version of the Trademark Act incorporates amendments up to Act No. 36 of May 14, 2014 ('An Act to amend the Patent Act, the Design Act, the Trademark Act, and the Act on International Applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty and the other Acts'), which comes into force on April 1, 2015.

The notification by Japan to the WTO under article 63.2 of TRIPS states:
'The Trademark Act was revised(i) to additionally cover certain trademarks in Japan, e.g., colors and sounds, and (ii) to add associations of commerce and industry, chambers of commerce and industry, and specified non-profit corporations as entities entitled to register regional collective trademarks, which was limited to cooperative associations and other bodies before amendment.'
