The Twenty-Eighth Session of the IGC took place from July 7 to 9, 2014. Further to the decisions taken by the Committee during IGC 26 and IGC 27 as well as the IGC 2014 work program , delegates at IGC 28 discussed the cross-cutting elements contained within the texts of the three thematic areas of the IGC’s work - genetic resources, traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expressions.
The Committee confirmed that the texts, as developed during IGC 26 and IGC 27, be transmitted to the 2014 WIPO General Assembly. Delegates also took stock of progress and discussed the future work of the Committee.
In accordance with the 2014 work program for the IGC, two days (Monday, March 24, 2014 and Monday, March 31, 2014) were set aside during the Session for the consideration of cross-cutting traditional knowledge/traditional cultural expressions issues.
At the close of the session, the Committee decided that the The Protection of Traditional Knowledge: Draft Articles, Rev. 2 and The Protection of Traditional Cultural Expressions, Rev. 2, developed during the session, be transmitted to the 2014 General Assembly, subject to any agreed adjustments or modifications arising on cross cutting issues at IGC 28.
IGC 26 took place from February 3 to 7, 2014 and addressed the theme of genetic resources. It was the first session of the IGC under the 2014/2015 mandate .
In accordance with the mandate, the session began with a half-day Ambassadorial/Senior Capital Based Official’s Meeting to share views on key policy issues relating to the negotiations, to further inform/guide the process.
At the close of the session, the Committee decided that the Consolidated Document relating to Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources Rev. 2, developed during the session, be transmitted to the 2014 General Assembly, subject to any agreed adjustments or modifications arising on cross cutting issues at IGC 28.
