Recent developments in the WIPO Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC).
The Twenty-Seventh session of the IGC will take place from March 24 to April 4, 2014, and will address the themes of traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expressions. The documents for the session are being posted progressively on our website.
IGC 26 took place from February 3 to 7, 2014 and addressed the theme of genetic resources. It was the first session of the IGC under the 2014/2015 mandate .
In accordance with the mandate, the session began with a half-day Ambassadorial/Senior Capital Based Official’s Meeting to share views on key policy issues relating to the negotiations, to further inform/guide the process.
At the close of the session, the Committee decided that the Consolidated Document relating to Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources Rev. 2, developed during the session, be transmitted to the 2014 General Assembly, subject to any agreed adjustments or modifications arising on cross cutting issues at IGC 28.
WIPO Assemblies 2013
- The WIPO General Assembly, in October 2013, agreed on a renewed mandate for the IGC in the 2014-2015 biennium, as well as a schedule of sessions and work program for 2014.
- Pursuant to its renewed mandate and work program for 2014, the Twenty-Sixth, Twenty-Seventh and Twenty-Eighth sessions of the IGC, are expected to be held in February, April and July, 2014, respectively.
- The 2014 General Assembly will, with a view to finalizing the text(s) within the biennium, take stock of and consider the text(s), progress made and decide on convening a Diplomatic Conference.
