The Government of Pakistan has been indicating for several years that they are interested in joining the Madrid System. This interest has been reflected in their discussions with the European Commission, and in IPO-Pakistan’s recent bilateral discussions with WIPO. A key factor impeding the realization of this stated goal is the continued resistance by the trademark attorneys, which, in turn, stems from concerns regarding a possible decline in their earnings subsequent to the country’s accession. In addition, IPO-Pakistan needs greater clarity on the measures (legislative, regulatory, organizational, human resources) required to accede to, and benefit from, the Madrid System. The visiting team would engage in discussions with colleagues concerned on issues of special relevance to Pakistan’s accession to the Madrid Protocol, including the steps to be taken to meet the obligations under the Protocol, and the measures required to fully benefit from the Madrid System. |
