The WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center provides alternative dispute resolution (ADR) advice and case administration services to Intellectual Property Offices (IPOs) as an additional option for parties to resolve intellectual property (IP) disputes before those IPOs through ADR methods. Ongoing collaborations include those with the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) and the Instituto Nacional de Propiedade Industrial of Brazil (INPI-BR).
At the sidelines of the 2013 WIPO Assemblies, Center staff and WIPO colleagues Mr. Darusman (WIPO Singapore Office) and Ms. Le Theix (Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific) met with the delegation of DGIPR, including Director General
Mr. Ahmad M. Ramli, to discuss potential collaboration between the Center and DGIPR in the area of ADR.
Following such meeting, DGIPR has proposed to the Center to co-organize a Workshop on Settlement of Intellectual Property Disputes through Mediation, on March 11 and 12, in Jakarta, Indonesia (letter attached). This Workshop will include DGIPR and local speakers as well as WIPO Neutral Mr. David Perkins, one expert from Asia and myself. FIT Japan has kindly agreed to cover part of the costs of the Workshop as indicated in the attached costing.
At the beginning of the event, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between DGIPR and WIPO (attached) will be concluded to establish a framework of collaboration for the development of special ADR procedures to facilitate the resolution of disputes before DGIPR through WIPO ADR. Any cases arising from such collaboration would be administered by the Center.
2. CIArb-WIPO-SIAC Intellectual Property, Media and Technology Arbitration Symposium
