Official Release of the Arabic Version of IP PANORAMATM Multimedia Toolkit
The Arabic version of the first ten modules of the IP PANORAMATM multimedia toolkit was officially launched at the LAS-WIPO-KIPO Arab Regional Symposium on the Strategic Use of IP in Business, which was held on March 17 and 18 in Cairo, Egypt.
The IP PANORAMA™ multimedia toolkit is an advanced e-learning tool on intellectual property (IP) for business with a very user-friendly interface. It has an animation-based story-line for effectively communicating the key messages concerning different aspects of intellectual property asset management in each of its 12 modules. It explains in layperson’s terms the practical relevance and strategic uses of different aspects of the IP system for business and its potential role in enhancing competitiveness and boosting profits. The four sets of learning points in each module convey a vast amount of knowledge which can be grasped by anyone, including those who have no prior knowledge of the intellectual property system.
The currently available 12 modules of the IP PANORAMATM multimedia toolkit were developed jointly by WIPO, the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) and the Korean Invention Promotion (KIPA). Encouraged by the successful launch of the first ten modules in 2007 and the subsequent use of the original English language version of the IP PANORAMATM multimedia toolkit, it was decided to create other UN language versions. The Arabic version is the first of the other UN language versions. The French and Spanish versions are being created, also in partnership with KIPO and KIPA, and are expected to be officially launched in the first quarter of 2011. The English and Arabic version of the IP PANORAMATM multimedia toolkit is currently availableathttp://www.wipo.int/sme/en/multimedia/andhttp://www.ippanorama.com/ar/.
The IP PANORAMATM multimedia toolkit is being used for self learning as well as for teaching and training purposes by a wide variety of institutions including face to face, distance learning and blended university programs for a wide variety of university courses and executive programs. Not for profit institutions are permitted to host the 12 modules of the IP PANORAMATM multimedia toolkiton their respective intranets on mutually agreed terms and conditions which do not require any payment to WIPO and/or KIPO, the joint owners of the copyright in the multimedia product. For-profit institutions will have to pay. All interested institutions may write to sme.mail@wipo.int to obtain further information.

Australian Government – Advisory Council on IP – Post Grant – Patent Enforcement Strategies – Final Report
Advisory Council on IP (ACIP) of Australia has recently published a report on issues relating to post-grant patent enforcement strategies to benefit the Australian economy by assisting patentees to effectively enforce their patent rights. The report’s primary focus has been on improving non-court-based enforcement strategies because ACIP believes this offers the best opportunity to make significant improvements that will particularly benefit Australian SMEs. ACIP makes a number of recommendations, the most significant being the establishment of an IP dispute resolution centre (IPDRC) within IP Australia.
Vital Requirements and Strategies for Community Trade Mark (CTM) Registration
For anyone interested in registering a community trade mark, there are some very useful tips here.
Maximizing the Contribution of IP Rights (IPRs) to SME Growth and Competitiveness
In this report, Stuart Macdonald, Tim Turpin and Amelia Ancog investigate the current and potential role of intellectual property rights (IPR) to support the growth and competitiveness of small and medium sizes enterprises in the ASEAN. The evidence from the ASEAN and elsewhere shows that the process through which IPR contributes to the success of SMEs is complex and needs to be understood in the context of business strategy and the ways technology is transferred and used by the SMEs. One of the key lessons is that national policies for promoting SME development are most successful when a number of development factors are aligned. While IPR is one of these factors, maximizing their contribution to the growth and development of SMEs in the ASEAN requires matching the various components of IPR regimes to different levels and stages of firm development in different national economic contexts.
