Title: LIGHT-COUPLING DEVICE FOR A DISPLAY BACKLIGHT ASSEMBLY
Abstract: A light-coupling device, for a display backlight assembly comprising a light source (60, S1, S2) and a lightguide (20), the device comprising an array (10) of waveguides of geometric cross section, the waveguides adapted to be interposed between the light source (60, S1, S2) and a side surface of the lightguide (20) to provide a light path therebetween, the waveguides being optically connected such that at least one waveguide in the array (10) is optically connected through a coupling element (30) to at least one other waveguide in the array (10). A waveguide array network may comprise active or passive, symmetric and/or asymmetric couplers (30-35), to provide a desired uniform or non-uniform distribution of light to the lightguide (20). The waveguide array (10) may be formed integrally with the lightguide (20); it may be formed of flexible material. A light source (60, S1, S2) may be contained within the waveguide array (10). Application of the invention to liquid crystal displays (70, 80), rubber keypads (90, 100), membrane switches, rigid panels, or the like.
