Title: COMPLEMENTARY FORCE AND POSITION CONTROL FOR AN AUTOMOTIVE STEERING SYSTEM
Abstract: A steer-by-wire control system and methods for vehicles is disclosed wherein a steering wheel unit (14) detects the position and movement of a steering wheel and sends a steering wheel position signal (20) to a master control unit (12). The master control unit (12) combines the information of the steering wheel position (20), a feedback torque sensor signal (36), with a vehicle speed signal (28) from a vehicle speed sensor (29) and tie-rod force signals (24, 26) from a road wheel unit (16). Using these input signals, the master control unit (12) produces road wheel command signals (19, 22) that are sent to the road wheel unit (16) and steering wheel torque command signal (18) is sent to the steering wheel unit (14).
