USE OF AN INDUCIBLE GENE FOR THE ENZYME CYCLOOXYGENASE TO LOWER INTRAOCULAR PRESSURE
|
| Abstract: |
A method of lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) employs a gene that encodes a cyclooxygenase (COX) enzyme. Two isoforms of COX (COX-1 and COX-2) produce prostaglandins PGE¿2? and PGF2$g(a). The method of treatment entails administering to the eye of a mammal in need thereof a gene construct encoding a polypeptide having COX activity. In a preferred embodiment the COX enzyme is COX-2. It is also preferred that the gene be inducible with a specific small molecule or cytokine associated with the onset or progression of glaucoma. |
