| Abstract: | Systems and methods are described that facilitate refueling a vehicle (20) with electrical energy by targeting receiver (30) thereon and pointing a high-intensity laser source (70) at the receiver (30). Vertical multi-junction (VMJ) photocells (60) receive the laser energy and convert the laser energy into electrical energy. The laser source (70) can operate at a range of output power levels depending on the vehicle's energy needs. The laser source (70) can be a pulsed or a continuous near- infrared laser source. A heat exchanger (180) can be coupled to the receiver (30) to dissipate laser energy not converted into electrical energy. If the vehicle (20) has a propeller, the heat exchanger (180) can be mounted to the vehicle (20) in the propeller wash path. | |||||||||||
