| Abstract: | Surgical implements (20) used during an operating procedure are detected in human tissue (21). Markers (18) attached to the surgical implements (20) change their impedance at a pre-selected frequency (12) in the presence of an electromagnetic field (16). Each of the markers (18) is thereby provided with signal-identifying characteristics. The signal-identifying characteristics are detected (8) outside the operating room in an accurate, reliable manner. Potential interference with operating room electronic instrumentation is avoided, the possibility of operator error is reduced and system cost and space requirements are substantially lowered. | ||||||||||||||||||
