IP Leverage for Biotechnical Innovations

Biotechnology is a field where technology advances rapidly. For this reason, it is vital for any company operating in this sector to protect the innovations that they generate with Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). In this case study you can see the example of Keygene, an SME that has been able to reap the entire benefit from their intellectual property capital by setting an IP strategy from the outset in line with their core business and put it into operational phases via proper IP management.

Case Study on Italy – How Italy Successfully Improved Its Approach to Intellectual Property Rights Protection

Despite current difficulties, Italy remains the 8th largest economy in the world with an economic value of 2.2 trillion USD (IMF, WEF). This global standing is based on the creative ability and production of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). SMEs account for 65% of GDP and 99.9% of all enterprises, of which 94.4% are micro organizations with an average number of employees of 3.9 (ISTAT).

What do these micro- or small businesses manufacture? Their success is based on the “Made-in-Italy brand”, products that relate to the Italian way of life which are associated with the benchmark for top-tier creativity, quality, originality, and singularity. In a nutshell, it defines everything that has to do with the good life and style, such as gastronomy, product design, cars, bicycles, motorcycles, and fashion. It also refers to all the products of fine artisanship and craftsmanship, including precision engineering, chemical, and pharmaceutical production. In essence, products that are appreciated and recognized throughout the world for their quality and uniqueness.

Intellectual Property and Business Plans

A business plan is a strategic document providing details on how a given innovation is going to be commercialized and brought to the market by an existing company or a newly created venture. Since the scope of the business plan is to describe not only the business logic behind the commercialization plans, but also the assets and resources that will make the business successful, the definition of a strong intellectual property (IP) protection and management policy and the business planning exercise are strongly interconnected.

Banking System Credit to Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) and Economic Growth in Nigeria: A Co-integration Approach

This study examined the impact of banking system credit to SMEs and economic growth in Nigeria using annual data covering 1981 to 2013 periods. The results revealed, however, that the banking system credit to SMEs gradually increased yearly as a result of increase in population and hence economic activities, the credit to SMEs as a percentage of total credit to the private sector declined yearly. Banking system credit to SMEs was not significant and thus did not contribute meaningfully to economic growth in Nigeria. Total credit to the private sector was statistically significant and positive at 5% level of significance. While lending rate has negative and significant impact on economic growth in Nigeria. The need for the government to intervene in a more meaningful way through articulated policies and programs that will promote funding of SMEs and reduce the level of lending interest rate have been recommended. This will stimulate and rejuvenate SMEs development and sustainability in Nigeria.
