1. In a letter dated April 7, 1999, the Director General of the National Algerian Institute for Industrial Property (INAPI) requested the Director General of WIPO to include an item on the agenda of the next session of the Assemblies of Member States of WIPO concerning the institutionalization of an international day for intellectual property. PROPOSAL BY THE NATIONAL ALGERIAN INSTITUTE
FOR INDUSTRIAL PROPERTY (INAPI)
Algiers, April 7, 1999
Ref: 027 DG/MS/99
Subject: Institutionalization of an International Day for Intellectual Property
In my statement made in plenary at the Thirty-third Assemblies of the Member States of WIPO, held in Geneva in September 1998, I suggested the institutionalization of an International Day for Intellectual Property as a prominent event that could be adopted as such.
The aim would be to set up a framework for broader mobilization and awareness, to open up access to the promotional aspect of innovation and to recognize the achievements of promoters of intellectual property throughout the world.
The holding of an exhibition of women inventors on the premises of WIPO last September was a first, and the trend towards awareness activities in intellectual property within national events constitute examples worthy of reflection in the establishing, at worldwide level, of an International Day devoted to observation and recognition of the endeavors accomplished in this field.
Aware of the organization that goes into the realization of such an action, I have the honor to propose that the agenda for the forthcoming Assemblies of the Member States should contain an item on the examination of this issue. The item could be entitled Proposals by Algeria for the Institutionalization of an International Day for Intellectual Property. At the appropriate time, we would be able to make concrete proposals on this subject.
Accept, Sir, the assurances of my highest consideration.
