Global Challenges Seminar Series: Innovation, Food Security and Rural Development: Collaboration and Partnerships

A presentation by Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, Egypt

Video Video

Dr. Serageldin, a world leading authority on rural development, gave his views on the relationship between innovation and food security, and the related issue of rural development and natural resources management.  He talked about the extent to which partnerships and collaborative approaches in agricultural research and technology should be harnessed for improving food security and facing the needs of a rapidly changing world.  This would range both upstream to inputs such as seeds, fertilizers and agricultural equipment, and also downstream to processing, storage and distribution.  He also examined the question of how partnerships in agricultural research could help in arriving at environmentally and financially sustainable solutions.

Dr. Serageldin is the Director of the Library of Alexandria, and was formerly Chairman of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and World Bank Vice-President for Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development.

The Global Challenges Seminar Series serves as an informal forum for sharing ideas, expertise and information on meeting global challenges.  It provides fact-based information and contributes to the global policy debates.  Leading experts and practitioners in the fields of public health, climate change and food security are invited to engage with the Geneva policy community and share their experience, perceptions of best practice, and come ready to have their ideas tested in an informal dialogue.
