Subject/Type: | Piracy |
Focus: | Music |
Country/Territory: | United States of America |
Objective: | To study: the impact of “free” music on music purchases; the effects of online sharing across different types of music; and the effect of alternative pricing and distribution on consumer behaviour. |
Sample: | 200+ college students |
Methodology: | Survey |
Main Findings
Found that men and younger individuals engage in more illegal downloading of music than women and older individuals. Price increases, lower income and improved bandwidth significantly increase on-line piracy of CDs, but not in the same proportion across different types of music.
The quality of downloaded music did not affect purchase intention, suggesting that campaigns focusing on the (superior) quality of CD recordings alone will probably not be effective in reducing illegal downloading. Across all music categories, consumers with low bandwidth were willing to pay more for CDs than those with fast Internet connections. Consumers are also willing to pay more for known than unknown songs.
