Anti-Piracy - Outreach Aimed at Movie Fans
BREIN Foundation
This Dutch foundation established in 1998, fights against IP fraud on behalf of authors, performers, editors, producers, and distributors of artistic works. In 2004 it launched a campaign to improve knowledge and awareness about copyright and piracy in co-operation with with the Dutch the film and videoindustry. The campaign includes a website, cinema and tv-commercials, panel discussions and print-advertisements.
Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA)
The MPAA’s 2004 Illegal Downloading - Inappropriate for All Ages campaign included advertisements placed in national newspapers and magazines, and college newspapers. The campaign aimed at students and parents explained the negative consequences of piracy and why it is illegal. The Respect Copyrights website contains additional information about copyright and movie piracy. Complementary trailers with the tagline Movies, They’re Worth It, were shown on movie screens throughout the US and as public service announcements on broadcast and cable networks.
National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Intellectual Property (INDECOPI) (Peru)
On November 21, 2004, INDECOPI launched the first Día del cine , an annual event organized to raise awareness about movie piracy. On this day (the third Sunday of every november), the prices of tickets at movie theater are substantially reduced to encourage movie fans to go to the cinema. Other events such as conferences and exhibitions related to cinema and copyright issues also take place on or around this date.
ZKM Zukunft Kino Marketing GmbH
ZKM is an initiative of German film associations, which has produced in the past few years a series of campaigns to prevent film piracy. The latest campaigns define piracy as a criminal activity with penal consequences. AKM distributes posters with catchy anti-piracy slogans at movie theaters and video stores throughout Germany. The campaigns target specific groups, for example, one of the latest posters consisted of a woman’s photograph accompanied by the tagline Auch Raubkopiererinnen sind Verbrecherinnen (female pirates are also thieves).
