Anti-Piracy - Outreach Aimed at Academic Institutions
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI)
In 2003, IFPI published the Copyright Use and Security Guide for Academic Institutions as a response to the problem of mass copying and transmission of music over college computer systems. The Guide advises academic institutions of the legal and technical risks of music piracy in the academic environment, what to do about it, and how to implement policies to minimize the risk to the institution and its computer users. The Guide was distributed to thousands of universities worldwide, and its PDF version can be freely downloaded in seven languages.
Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA)
The SIAA provides several information materials for academic institutions. The SIAA website, brochures and flyers provide information as to what academic institutions can and cannot do with copyrighted software according to US law, as well as tips on spotting and stopping infringing activities. The SIIA also sells a nine-minute educational video for students entitled Don’t Copy That Floppy.
University of California
The University of California's
Share Right
campaign spreads the message among the University’s community that it will not be held liable
for any copyright infringements committed in its networks, and that students/employees are
individually liable for any lawsuits by copyright holders. The website provides background
information on copyright and file sharing, as well as posters, images and text that can be adapted
by the different campus administrators.
