Anti-Piracy - Outreach Aimed at Law Enforcement Officers

The  Cartilla Práctica sobre Piratería  published in 2004 by this group is a guide for law enforcement officers to be used in their anti-piracy enforcement efforts. Among other things, the guide provides a glossary of terms, and information on how to identify pirated books, software, phonograms, videos, DVDs, and broadcast signals. 

 

Entertainment and Leisure Software Association (ELSPA)

This UK association presents its yearly  Awards for Individual Excellence to individual law enforcement officers for their outstanding contributions to combating computer game piracy. The ELSPA also has a guide to help enforcement officers identify pirated/counterfeit software.

 

Entertainment Software Association (ESA)

This American association provides free training seminars for enforcement officials worldwide. The ESA also provides free training manuals and access to its training web site

 

Global Anti-Counterfeiting Network (GACG)

The annual Global Anti-Counterfeiting Awards were instituted in 1999 and are jointly sponsored and administered by the GACG. These awards are presented as recognition of "exceptional work in the international campaign against the trade in fakes". Recipients of the awards have included official organizations, right holders, associations and the media. These awards generate considerable publicity and thereby help to raise even more awareness of the issue.

 

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI)

IFPI’s Training unit works with law enforcement agencies around the world in designing and delivering training programs on enforcement issues related to music piracy. It’s educational materials for police and customs officers include a  Manual of Guidance and the Tracking the Music Pirates video.

 

Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO)

Four times a year, KIPO organizes courses at the International Intellectual Property Training Institute for prosecutors, police, customs officers and local government officials. The courses teach basic information on IP laws and regulations and provide training on practical skills such as the identification of counterfeit goods. The lectures are complemented with tours and follow-up consultations on anti-counterfeiting activities .

 

World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)

WIPO organizes seminars, workshops and training materials on the enforcement of intellectual property rights for judges, general prosecutors, police officers and customs officials. Recent venues for these workshops include Amman, Jordan and Guatemala City in April 2004, Santiago, Chile in May 2004, Nairobi, Kenya in June 2004, Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago and Castries, St. Lucia on September 2004.
