Increasing IP Use: Outreach Aimed at Young People

The Copyright Society of the U.S.A developed the Copyright Kids website, which teaches the basics of copyright law to children with simple explanations, a glossary, a yearbook activity and quiz. The society organizes an annual Copyright Awareness Week targeting young people, including radio public service announcements recorded by well known singers, newspaper articles and talks in classrooms across the country.

 

Department of Intellectual Property

Thailand’s Department of Intellectual Property has created the  IP for Kids website to increase IP awareness among school children. This website contains basic explanations of copyright, patents and trademarks, as well as interactive games.

The Colombian Copyright Office produced the Vivan los Autores children’s book, which was distributed to Colombian schools for classroom use. It is one of the main components of an awareness raising campaign to promote the rights of authors and educate about the dangers of piracy. Another component of the Office’s awareness-raising campaign consisted of posters placed in the public transport network.

 

Intellectual Property Department of the Government of Hong Kong SAR

The website of the Hong Kong IP Department includes a well developed Educational Corner to help teach IP notions to schoolchildren. The Office’s program incorporates school visits, a web-based interactive teaching kit, comics, a computer game, and competitions. The Office also works through the Scout movement to help reach young people.

 

Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS)

IPOS’ Iperckidz initiative uses a cartoon figure, "Detective IP," and his catch phrase "Be Curious, Investigate IP" as a unifying element in activities/products which include an interactive kids website and CD-ROM, IP camps, competitions and assembly talks.

 

Irish Patents Office

The Student Zone of the Irish Patents Office website provides basic information on different types of IP, plus the stories of Irish inventors, and down-loadable posters and publications for young people.

 

Jordan Intellectual Property Institute (JIPA)

JIPA runs an annual Schools Competition with cash prizes for the best essay about the impact of IP in everyday life.

 

Oficina Cubana de la Propiedad Industrial

Expedición de caza en el bosque de las invenciones (Going hunting in the forest of inventions), published by the Cuban Industrial Property Office , explores the history of inventions and IP concepts in an entertaining storybook format.

 

The UK Patent Office

The  THINK Kit ® created for secondary school students by the UK Patent Office, presents case studies of well known companies and brands to demonstrate how business organizations use IP. It includes lesson plans to help teachers use the materials in accordance to the national curriculum. One of the case studies led to two national competitions to encourage students to design packaging and develop a promotional campaign for a product.

 

United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

The Kids Pages of the USPTO website provides games, puzzles and basic information, including a game which teaches children to conduct patent searches.
