Increasing IP Use: Outreach Aimed at Universities

Japan Patent Office (JPO)

Since 2002, the JPO has sent IP Management Advisors and private sector IP Managers to Japanese universities in order to support the establishment of IP management units in these institutions. By complementing the direct communication from these advisors with publications and seminars, the JPO has created a program to not only increase IP awareness at universities but also establish structures at these institutions, which will allow them to easily protect their future intellectual assets.

 

Philips Intellectual Property & Standards

Philips has set up local IP Academies with the aim of sharing international IP expertise with Chinese students. These offer courses given by IP experts from Philips, a scholarship program, an IPR research program and an exchange program for EU and Chinese professors.

 

The University of Western Australia (UWA)

The Legal Services of the UWA published an IP Policy Guide explaining how the University manages its IP. This guide raises IP awareness among the University’s students and staff who can use it to understand how to protect their research results with IP tools.

 

University of Melbourne

The Research Innovation and Development Group of this University provides students and staff with advice and training on IP, protection and management. The Group uses a special section in the University’s website, brochures, and personal consultations to provide this information.

 

WIPO University Initiative

The WIPO University Initiative program disseminates IP information materials to designated IP coordinators in participating universities, and encourages them to establish IP information and management centers.
