Increasing IP Use: Outreach Aimed at the General Public

BREIN Foundation

In 2002, this Dutch foundation launched the campaign Auteursrecht – o zit dat zo in cooperation with the Ministries of Justice and Education. The campaign and website provide consumers with information about copyright and related rights, explaining how it applies to the many different categories of professions and creators who use it.

The Coalition for Intellectual Property Rights (CIPR)

This private-public partnership aims at educating and shaping the opinions of government, business leaders, media and the general public, with regards to IPRs, in the CIS countries and the Baltic states. The CIPR’s public awareness-raising activities have included surveys to expose consumer attitudes towards counterfeits. It has also worked with Interpol to develop anti-counterfeiting public awareness programs.

United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

UNESCO organizes the celebration of World Book and Copyright Day every year on April 23. One of the main objectives of this day is to promote the protection of written works through the use of copyright. This day also provides an opportunity for the general public to recognize the achievements and rights of authors who have contributed to social and cultural progress. To mark this celebration of books, writers and their rights, UNESCO enlists the help of partners including authors, publishers, teachers, librarians, public and private institutions, NGOs and the mass media.

World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)

WIPO’s Communications and Public Outreach Division uses a variety of free publications andfilm products to communicate basic IP concepts and their benefits to the general public. It also promotes World Intellectual Property Day every April 26 to raise public awareness and to communicate chosen messages about creativity, or respect for, or use of IP.
