Office for Strategic Use of Intellectual Property for Development
Structure
The OSUIPD is comprised of four divisions:
- Creative Industries Division (CID)
- Intellectual Property and Economic Development Division (IPEDD)
- Intellectual Property and New Technologies Division (IPNT)
- Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises Division (SMEs)
Challenges
In order to reap the benefits of intellectual property (IP) assets, legal and institutional infrastructure modernization must be complemented by proactive awareness creation and practical assistance to entrepreneurs, creators, innovators, business, public research institutions and academia to identify, protect, exploit and manage their IP assets more effectively.
Objectives
The overall objectives of the four Divisions in the OSUIPD are to assist Member States, particularly in developing countries and countries in transition, in effectively utilizing the IP system for development, extending support to SMEs and enhancing IP assets management capacity. These objective are to be achieved through activities aimed at enhancing the ability of the enterprise sector, including SMEs, to use the IP system as a tool to enhance their competitiveness and comparative advantage; strengthening the capacity of governments and public research organizations to manage their intellectual assets effectively; encouraging and promoting new projects which address the relationship of IP assets to new technological and cultural industry development; and supporting the development of specific sectors/regions through the active use of IP.
Cooperation
The Office of Strategic Use of IP for Development will cooperate closely with all areas of the Organization involved in the implementation of the WIPO Development Agenda and has special links with the regional Bureaus for Africa, Arab, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean countries, certain countries in Europe and Asia, the WIPO World Wide Academy and all other sectors in house involved in the strategic use of IP for development.
