IAP Support for Colombian Inventor of the Year Winners

The awards ceremony for Colombian Inventor of the Year (2017) – the annual prize awarded to outstanding Colombian inventors – took place on February 16, 2018, in Bogota, Colombia.  The awards are organized by the Colombian Industrial Property Office (Superintendencia de Industria y Comercio (SIC)), with the support of the Inventor Assistance Program (IAP) of WIPO.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Marco Aleman, Director of the Patent Law Division at WIPO, drew the attention of participants to the important work undertaken by the SIC in promoting the use of the patent system by local inventors:

The entire patent system is built upon the premise that granting patents to inventors encourages innovation.

Winners

The Superintendent of SIC, Mr. Pablo Felipe Robledo, announced the winners:

  • Sebastian Ibarra won in the children category with an automatic gas leak monitor;
  • Alberto Mario Moro won in the youth category with a chemical-magnet reactor;
  • David García and Mr. Haiberney Ríos won in the research category with a wind collector; and
  • Pedro Miguel Bernal won in the industry category with a bioelectric oil.

The four winners will enjoy support from the IAP, as well as a free-of-charge patent application process with the SIC.
