Hague System – Greece and Italy ratify the Geneva Act (1999)

January 12, 2024

The Geneva Act (1999) of the Hague Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Industrial Designs is set to take effect in Greece on February 13, 2024, followed by Italy on March 14, 2024.

The ratifications by Greece and Italy bring the total number of Contracting Parties to the 1999 Geneva Act to 73.

With the ratifications of the 1999 Geneva Act by Greece and Italy, a major milestone has been reached as all members of the European Union that have previously acceded to the 1960 Hague Act have now acceded to the 1999 Geneva Act.

What does this mean for designers worldwide?

From February 13, 2024, and March 14, 2024, respectively, non-residents seeking design protection in Greece or Italy will be able to designate the country through the 1999 Geneva Act.

Reminder! The European Union is also a Contracting Party to the 1999 Geneva Act. A designation of the European Union covers all its 27 member States. However, there may be situations where as an applicant you prefer to designate only certain States individually.
