The Office carries out an examination on substantive grounds, including an examination on universal novelty. |

| Time Limit for Responding to Refusal |
One month from the date of notification by the Office (extendable for a maximum of three months provided reasons are given). |
| Effect as Grant of Protection |
The international registration has the effect as a grant of protection, if no refusal has been issued, as from the international registration date. If a refusal (partial or total) has been issued and the refusal has been subsequently withdrawn, the international registration has the effect as a grant of protection as from the international registration date. |
| Representation before the Office |
Holders of international registrations may not file documents or appear directly before the Office. Foreign, natural or legal persons must be represented by a representative registered in the Register of Representatives kept by the Office, or by a Serbian lawyer.
