Climate Change and Intellectual Property
Innovative green technology solutions are essential to reducing the environmental impact of human activities and supporting adaptation to climate change. They help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency and promote the sustainable use of natural resources. The key challenge is to enhance the green innovation ecosystem and accelerate the diffusion of green technologies around the world. By fostering research, development and widespread adoption of such solutions, societies can transition toward a low-carbon economy while stimulating economic growth and protecting the environment for future generations.
WIPO works with multiple stakeholders to address these challenges and promote innovative solutions, with a particular focus on:
- Hosting WIPO GREEN - a multi-stakeholder platform which aims to promote innovation and diffusion of green technologies;
- Contributing intellectual property (IP) expertise to the United Nations and other public policy fora to advance the global climate change agenda through informed discussions on IP, innovation, climate change, food security and the environment.
