Historically, the exchange of IP documentation and data has been agreed on a bilateral basis and has taken place free-of-charge. WIPO’s new Global Dissemination of IP Data initiative aims to promote and expand this practice in order to foster innovation and creativity.
In practical terms, the Initiative encourages and supports the exchange of IP data among national/regional IP offices and WIPO. This data is then often made available to the public through national IP databases and through WIPO’s global IP databases (PATENTSCOPE, Global Brand Database, Global Design Database, etc.).
In addition during the second half of 2017 a new high-tech facility for bulk data exchange will begin operation, enhancing IP data sharing among IP offices. Participation in the bulk data facility is an optional element of the Initiative.
