Mauritius Joins the Madrid System

Mauritius has joined the Madrid System, rounding up the number of countries covered by WIPO’s international trademark system to 130.

The Government of Mauritius deposited its instrument of accession to the Madrid Protocol with WIPO Director General, Daren Tang on February 6, 2023. Mauritius is the 114th member of the Madrid System. Its accession further strengthens the Madrid System’s status as a truly global option for trademark protection, and particularly in the Eastern Africa and Indian Ocean Regions.

WIPO Director General Daren Tang welcomes the accessions of Mauritius to WIPO’s Madrid and Hague Systems.

The Madrid Protocol will enter into force in Mauritius on May 6, 2023.

What does this mean for you?

Starting May 6, 2023….

  • Brand owners in Mauritius will be able to seek protection of their trademarks in any of the other 129 countries covered by the Madrid System, by filing just one international application and paying a single set of fees;

  • Users of the Madrid System worldwide will be able to designate Mauritius when filing their international applications, and existing holders of international registrations will be able to expand the geographical scope of protection of their registrations to include Mauritius, using eMadrid.
