National Workshop on Innovation Promotion and Technology Transfer, Belgrade, Serbia, June 21 and 22, 2011

  The National Workshop on Innovation Promotion and Technology Transfer was organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), jointly by the Innovation and Technology Transfer Section (ITTS), Patents and Innovation Division, and the Division for Certain Countries in Europe and Asia (DCEA), in cooperation with the Intellectual Property Office of the Republic of Serbia (IPO). It took place in Belgrade, Serbia, on June 21 and 22, 2011.

  The aim of the workshop was to raise awareness on the benefits arising from the protection of inventions and transfer of technology as means of commercialization and utilization of inventions for the scientific and research and development (R&D) institutions.

  The opening remarks were given by Mrs. Branka Totić, Director of the Serbian IPO, who briefly addressed the innovation situation in Serbia and the steps that were recently taken to create favorable conditions for it. Mrs. Totić also spoke about the efforts made by the Government in the establishment of an adequate legal framework through the adoption of the Strategy of Scientific and Technological Development 2010-2015: "Focus and Partner", the Law on the Innovation Activities and the IP National Strategy developed by the support of WIPO, expressing therefore satisfaction with the results of the Serbian IPO and WIPO cooperation.

  WIPO official, Mrs. Olga Spasić, Senior Program Officer (ITTS), delivered five presentations and one exercise on institutional policies which was delivered in Serbian and highly appreciated by the participants.

  The workshop was attended by 54 participants from leading scientific and R&D institutions in Serbia. The majority were senior level R&D and government officials who, making rather challenging questions, actively contributed to the highly dynamic and professional discussions.
