Virtual Regional Meeting of Intellectual Property Office Officials Responsible for the Madrid System for Selected Latin America and the Caribbean Countries

From December 6 to 8, 2022, we held a virtual regional meeting on the Madrid System for selected current and future members in Latin America and the Caribbean regions, which use English as a working language. The event was organized with support from Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global (FIT/Japan IP Global).

This was the first regional meeting organized for this region under the FIT/Japan IP Global. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss operational issues with the aim of improving efficiency, consistency, and promotion of the Madrid System.

24 participants attended the meeting:

  • Member countries: Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, Belize, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago; and
  • Future member country: Barbados.

About the Meeting

The meeting covered all aspects of the Madrid System, including the role played by the Office of Origin and the Office of a Designated Contracting Party, classification, data communication (MECA, Madrid Office Portal, Madrid e-Filing, IPAS), and national/regional promotion of the Madrid System.

Officials from the Japan Patent Office (JPO) delivered an opening remark and a presentation via video during the event.

Throughout the three days, participants actively shared their experiences, and had plenty of opportunities to get answers to their many questions.
