WIPO Regional Training Program on Cloud-Native IPAS 4 for ARIPO Member States

From April 3 to 6, 2023, WIPO, together with the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO), co-organized WIPO Regional Training Program on Cloud-Native IPAS 4 for ARIPO Member States at the ARIPO Regional Training Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe, with support from Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global (FIT/Japan IP Global). The training program welcomed 32 officials from ARIPO and IP offices in Botswana, Cape Verde, Eswatini, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Príncipe, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zanzibar, and Zimbabwe.

The main objectives of the training were (i) to introduce participants to the cloud environment and innovative strategies on system support and maintenance; (ii) to introduce participants to the cloud-native IPAS 4 and its new features, functions, and services; (iii) to discuss prerequisites and requirements for deployment of IPAS 4; and (iv) to communicate WIPO’s support and maintenance model for the cloud-hosted IPAS 4.

The training program welcomed 32 officials in person from ARIPO and IP offices in Botswana, Cape Verde, Eswatini, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Príncipe, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zanzibar, and Zimbabwe. The participants came from diverse backgrounds with diverse knowledge and experience of IP administration and management, legal and information technology.

The training was opened by the Director General of ARIPO, Mr. Bemanya Twebaze, Mr. Junya Iihoshi, Deputy Director, Information Technology and Patent Information Management Office, on behalf of the Japan Patent Office, and Mr. Gregory Sadyalunda, Regional Manager for Africa, IP Office Business Solutions Division, on behalf of WIPO.

What did the training cover?

A range of topics relating to WIPO IPAS 4.0 Cloud service were covered, and relevant demonstrations and hands-on experiences were provided during the event, including:

  • IPAS 4.0 overview and Cloud policies and procedures;
  • Reception and data capture in IPAS 4.0;
  • Search and examination, and publication in IPAS 4.0;
  • Registration and post-registration office actions in IPAS 4.0; and
  • Available tools, resources, and services on IPAS 4.0 and other tools available to ARIPO member states.
