Digitization Project in Thailand

November 29, 2022

In 2022, WIPO completed a digitization project in Thailand in cooperation with the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) and with support from the Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global (FIT/Japan IP Global).

The objectives of this project were: i) to digitize patent and petty patent documents to provide users with detailed information and further use the digitized patent and petty patent data in a way of providing advanced IP information to the public; ii) to modernize the patent information system to meet increasing demands and use by domestic and foreign entities; iii) to link the local patent database with other databases managed by governmental agencies to regularly provide and exchange among them and to enable users to access information sources accurately, timely and effectively as well as promote the automation of administrative procedures as guided by the government; and iv) to digitize all the patent and petty patent documents at the DIP, which must be completed with higher data quality and security to facilitate archiving in a cost effective manner, and develop tools to process and exploit information to serve for various demands of users.

Digitization project was implemented with the financial support FIT/Japan IP Global in order to scan 43,000 patent applications covering 5,580,884 pages (1997-2015).  Final evaluation was arranged to review all the scanned documents and data uploaded into DIP e-patent systems.  It was noted that evaluation of 10% of images was undertaken to ensure the quality of scanned images and verified before the final uploading of data.
