New Global Intellectual Property Issues
The Arab Bureau focuses on strengthening the capacity of the Arab countries to timely assess the overall potential benefits of intellectual property considerations on a number of emerging global issues. The Bureau also concentrates on building awareness and providing a clearer understanding of the legal, economic, technical, and social dimensions of intellectual property protection in relation to the preservation of biological diversity, the protection of traditional knowledge, and the protection of expressions of folklore.
National workshops are organized on traditional knowledge with an emphasis on expressions of folklore. The aim is to provide the local authorities with training and assistance on the documentation, preservation, maintenance and protection of folklore at national, sub-regional and regional levels.
Several workshops have been organized for the Arab countries to familiarize the Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME's) on the business and contractual dimensions of acquisition and transfer of intellectual property rights and in particular to provide the SMEs with practical know-how in identifying and accessing technology and acquiring related intellectual property on reasonable terms.
Furthermore, national seminars on licensing and transfer of technology are regularly organized to study the legal, financial and technical aspects relating to the transfer of technology protected under intellectual property rights. The seminars also provide insight and skills on the process of negotiating licensing contracts.
