While I believe that people who collect domain names and then try to sell
them to the highest bid are the lowest form of capitalist trash, this
proposal is no better. The proposal being bandied about would basically
give the power to the highest bidder...without bidding!
This is a first come, first serve issue. and so be it. We lost our first
company trademark by two weeks. Tough luck. We came up with an
alternative, and a domain name that was available.
If people stop paying the idiots collecting the domains, then they will
stop collecting them. But it is no place for government. And trademarking
names or terms permanently and for any use has gotten completely out of
control, as has the patent system.
Over regulation has destroyed so many wonderful things. Let's take a step
back on this one.
