Curriculum Vitae - Mr. L. Yves Fortier, C.C., Q.C.
Mr. L. Yves Fortier is Chairman and Senior Partner of Ogilvy Renault in Montréal. He was Canada's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, from 1988 to 1992. Since 1992, his practice has been devoted principally to international arbitration. He has served as Chairman and party appointed arbitrator in numerous ad hoc arbitrations and arbitrations under the auspices of ICC, LCIA, AAA, ICSID and other arbitral institutions. In 1993, was appointed by the UN Security Council as Chairman of a Panel of the UN Compensation Commission (Iraq-Kuwait) in Geneva. He was recently appointed as Chairman of another UNCC Panel and was appointed in 1998 a member of the Claims Resolution Tribunal for Dormant Accounts in Switzerland. Presently a judge ad hoc of the International Court of Justice in The Hague and President of the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) since January 1 st, 1998.
Mr. Fortier received a BA from Université de Montréal in 1955, a B.C.L. from McGill University in 1958 and a B. Litt from Oxford University in 1960 where he studied as a Rhodes Scholars. He was admitted to the Quebec Bar in 1961. Mr. Fortier was appointed an officer of the Order of Canada in 1984 and was elevated to the level of Companion, the highest rank in the Order, in 1991.
