General Information

Purpose: Open TLD without restrictions (anyone can register any domain name)
Registry: Afilias Ltd.
Status: Accreditation agreement with ICANN signed on May 15, 2001 See Apendix J of the .info Accreditation Agreement for details
Registration Restrictions: None
Pre-Registration Trademark Protection Mechanisms:
  • Sunrise Registration Period: Trademark owners can file a domain name application before the general public regarding a domain name that is identical to the textual elements of a trademark which had national effect prior to October 2, 2000
    See Appendix J of the .info Accreditation Agreement for details

  • Sunrise Challenge Policy (SCP): Any person can submit a challenge against domain names registered during the Sunrise Registration Period. Such challenges are administered under the SCP Rules
Timeline: July 25 - August 28, 2001
· Sunrise Registration Period - domain name applications by trademark owners
· Selection of domain names on a randomized basis

August 29 - September 11, 2001
· Quiet period - Registry accepts no registration requests

August 28 - December 26, 2001
· Sunrise challenge period
· SCP Challenges against sunrise registrations can be filed
· Based on lack of eligibility to file a sunrise application

as of September 12, 2001
· Open Registration - Registration requests from the general public
· Selection of domain names on a randomized basis

September 19, 2001
· .info domain names resolve
· Real time applications on a first-come, first served basis

Dispute Resolution Policies:

Sunrise Challenge Policy (SCP)
· Exclusively administered by WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center
· For disputes concerning eligibility to register during or pursuant sunrise period
· Challenge successful if:
- Registrant has no current trademark registration, or
- Trademark registration is not of national effect, or
- Trademark registration not prior to October 2, 2000, or
- Domain name is not identical to trademark
· Challengers requesting transfer are required to demonstrate their compliance with the sunrise registration conditions by submitting a trademark certificate
· $295 fee (see SCP Rules for details)
· Submission by web claim form only
· No preclusion of procedure concerning the same domain name under the UDRP
