WIPO Academy and Costa Rica Commit to Grassroots-Focused Support

The WIPO Academy and the National Registry of the Republic of Costa Rica agreed to enhance the intellectual property (IP) knowledge and skills-building efforts targeting key local sectors through the intellectual property training institution (IPTI) in Costa Rica.

Mr. Agustín Meléndez García, Director General of the National Registry of the Republic of Costa Rica, and Mr. Sherif Saadallah, Executive Director of the WIPO Academy signed a letter of intent in the margins of the 64th Assemblies of the Member States of WIPO formalizing the collaboration.

The key priority areas of the collaboration will upskill the private sector, particularly start-ups and indigenous communities, the public sector and academia through:

  • Bringing IP skills-building opportunities to the regions outside the capital;
  • Helping micro, small and medium-sized enterprises include IP in their business models;
  • Specialized programs for women; and
  • IP education for innovation and new technologies.

The efforts are also reflected in the national IP strategy of Costa Rica and the IPTI business plan.
