ANA MARIA PACON is a Peruvian lawyer from the Catholic University of Peru. After a few years of practicing law with a Peruvian law firm, she went to Germany, where she earned her Master’s Degree and PhD at the University of Augsburg.

She was a Member of the Research Staff of the Max-Planck-Institute of Munich, Germany, until she became the President of the Tribunal for the Defense of the Free Competition and Protection of the Intellectual Property of the National Patent Office of Peru (Indecopi). She was also a negotiator for Peru on intellectual property issues for different international fora, including the Andean Community and the Free Trade Area of the Americas, where she was an Andean speaker.

Currently she is a Professor of Law and a Member of the Advisory Board of the Catholic University of Peru Master of Intellectual Property and Competition Law degree program. She has written and lectured on diverse aspects of intellectual property law, including Patent and Trademark Law. She is also a Professor of Trademark Law of the University of Los Andes Postgraduate Studies program in Merida, Venezuela and a Professor of International and Comparative Law on Industrial Property of the Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona Master of Business Law (MADE) program in Spain.

In recent years, she has been working on different issues that have implications mainly on developing countries (traditional knowledge, access to genetic resources, access to medicines, recently developments on the international harmonization of patent law, among others). She is involved in different studies regarding the negotiations of the Free Trade Agreement USA-Andean countries: "The Assessment of the Impact of the FTAA and FTA Hemispheric negotiations with the United States", funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (BID) and implemented by the Andean Community General Secretariat and "The impact of the negotiations of the FTA with the United States regarding intellectual property matters", funded by the Andean Development Corporation (CAF) and implemented by APOYO Consultoria S.A.

She is also working on different projects on access to genetic resources and biodiversity: "Process for the development of a benefit-sharing prototype for the benefits obtained from the exploitation of natural resources of the Ecuadorian Amazon" (ProBenefit), sponsored by the German Ministry of Education and Sciences (BMBF) and the MOSAICs project for the development of a system for the access and transfer of microbiologic resources, funded by the Economic Commission for Europe.
