Project for the Establishment of National Intellectual Property (IP) Academies
Introduction
The Pilot Project for the Establishment of National IP Academies (Project Code DA_10_01), was approved during third session of the Committee on Development and Intellectual Property (CDIP), which was held in Geneva from April 27 to May 1, 2009.
The objective of the Project is to “test a new model to help developing countries and LDCs to establish an IP training institution with minimum resources to meet their increasing demand from IP specialists, professionals, government officials and other stakeholders.”
Objectives
WIPO, through the WIPO Academy, will assist beneficiary Member States in the establishment of national IP Academies during an initial period of two years.
WIPO's assistance will focus in particular on the following actions:
a) To advice on the institutional set-up of the Academy, including the preparation of:
i) a needs assessment report with realistic recommendations;
ii) a detailed implementation plan, agreed in consultation with beneficiary Member States ;
b) To support the development of curricula and detailed and tailor made programs according to the development goals for beneficiary Member States, taking into consideration the importance of ensuring a balance between IP protection and the public interest.
c) To provide beneficiary Member States with the training programs offered by the WIPO Academy for trainers of national universities and R&D institutions, whenever possible;
d) To assist beneficiary Member States in the establishment of an IP Library.
