Overview
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) based in Geneva, Switzerland, will offer for the first time jointly with the National Intellectual Property Management Office (NIPMO), Department of Science and Technology of the Republic of South Africa, a two-week Summer School on Intellectual Property and Transfer of Technology (WSSTT), from
November 26 to December 7, 2012
This Summer School offers an invaluable education program in the area of intellectual property and transfer of technology.
Fifty places will be made available. Selected applicants will be notified one week after the registration deadline (see Registration below).
Objective
The objective of the Summer School is to provide an opportunity for senior students and young professionals to acquire deeper knowledge of intellectual property and transfer of technology and to discuss current issues pertaining to the management and commercialization of intellectual property. This Summer School purports to highlight the role WIPO plays in the global administration of intellectual property in enhancing transfer of technology.
Who May Apply?
Senior students (graduate and postgraduate students) and young professionals from any field of study or discipline. The program is designed for candidates who are already familiar with the subject.

Distance Learning
Pre-selected candidates will be required to successfully complete a special session of the Academy's distance learning Course on Intellectual Property Management. Dates for this session will be announced upon pre-selection.
Program
The program consists of lectures by eminent experts in the field of intellectual property and transfer of technology, both from WIPO and external. The program also includes, inter alia, topics pertaining to intellectual property management and commercialization, role of intellectual property rights in transfer of technology and economic growth, licensing negotiations, drafting of licensing agreements, licensing methods in technology transfer, start-ups and spin-offs from public sector institutions, hands-on case studies, techniques for enhancing innovation skills, transfer of ownership (assignment), industry-academia interaction in transfer of technology and intellectual property rights, field trips and and group discussions on selected topics. At the end of the course, a certificate of participation is awarded to those who successfully complete all requirements of the program.
Insurance and Medical Examination
Non-resident participants will be provided with insurance coverage for the duration of their stay in connection with the Summer School program.
Each participant will be required to present a medical certificate upon arrival.
Travel, Accommodation and Living Expenses
Participants are responsible for their own travel to and from Cape Town, accommodation and living expenses during their participation of the program.
