What is the DL101 course about?
The General Course on Intellectual Property (DL101) is offered by the Academy twice a year as part of the Academy’s policy of cooperation for promotion of awareness on Intellectual Property (IP) in the world.
The course aims at providing participants with basic knowedge of Intellectual Property issues, such as Copyright and related rights, trademarks, patents and the international treaties for the protection of IP. It does not cover specific matters concerning national aspects of IP.
Who can participate in this course?
This course is available for anyone interested in acquiring general, although detailed, knowledge about intellectual property and the main international treaties governing its protection. You don't need to have any prior knowledge of the aspects or degree to enroll.
Nevertheless, it is recommended that students have at least an under-graduate degree in order to fully understand the course contents.
Is this course free of charge?
Yes. The DL101 course is entirely free of charge for students.
Does this course offer tutorial assistance?
Yes. Although you will not have a specific tutor whom you may address your questions directly to, you may forward any substantive questions you might have to the course administration during the course session, and we will have an in-house expert reply to you.
How do I access the course material?
The course material is made available to students through the link and access codes that are sent to the them before the beginning of the session. Students are expected to start reading the text and taking the end-of-module tests to examine how well they have learned the objectives that are found on the first page of each of the substantive modules.
I don't have much access to Internet. Can I study offline?
The course was also designed to address the needs of those who might not have extensive access to the internet. If you do not have easy access to the internet or you prefer to study off line, please download the PDF format of the module by clicking on the 'PDF' on the left side of the course content. This will also allow you to print the material or use the content locally on your computer wihout accessing the internet.
Do I have to access the course contents on line for a total of 50 hours?
No. The materials are available on line for the six weeks the session lasts, and you may access and study them according to your availability. The 50 hours of study are just an estimation of hours necessary for an average student to assimilate the contents of the course. The materials are also available in PDF format, so you may download them and study away from a computer or not connected to the course, if you need.
Do I have to go to a distance learning center to take the final exam?
No. The distance learning courses offered by the WIPO Academy are entirely offered online.
Is this course subject to a final exam? How is the final exam?
After the end of the session, a final exam, consisting of about 35 questions in multiple-choice format, is made available to the students, who have about two hours within a three-day period to submit their answers.
Will I receive a certificate of completion for this course?
Students who obtain a grade of 50% or higher are entitled to a certificate of completion of the course, which is sent by mail.
