Launch of China IP Publicity Week

April 25, 2018

On April 20, the Chinese government held a launch event in Beijing to kick off China Intellectual Property (IP) Publicity Week, an annual one-week campaign organized since 2009 by the Chinese government to raise public awareness of IP ahead of World IP Day.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Wang Yong, State Councilor of China, pointed out that China has made historical achievements in the development of IP and that IP rights will play an ever more important role in helping transform China into an innovative country.

He stressed that China should strengthen the creation and protection of IP rights so as to further enhance innovation capability and quality in the country, as well as the competitiveness of China's economy.

Message from WIPO Director General

A message by WIPO Director General Francis Gurry was read out by WIPO Deputy Director General Ms. Wang Binying at the Ceremony.

In the message, Mr. Gurry lauded China’s IP efforts and said the concerted work of the Chinese government to put in place an IP system has helped transform China in terms of innovation and creativity.

While mentioning the theme of World IP Day 2018, Mr. Gurry also noted that, while the number of women in innovation has increased over the years, we are still far from gender parity.  Mr. Gurry appealed to all to help improve opportunities for women to participate in innovation. This, he said, will have benefits for the whole world.

Thousands of activities will be organized in China to celebrate World IP Day 2018.
