WOC Live on People’s Daily Website

July 11, 2016

On the occasion of World IP Day 2016, Mr. Chen Hongbing, Director of the WIPO Office in China (WOC) took part in a TV interview with the People’s Daily Website on relations between WIPO and China.

People’s Daily is one of the leading newspapers in China and its website has developed into an influential all-media outlet. The interview was broadcast live online and a recording and transcription are available.

The other two interviewees were Mr. Wu Kai, Director General of the Department of International Cooperation of the State Intellectual Property Office of the People’s Republic of China (SIPO) and Mr. Zhang Zhicheng, Deputy Director General of SIPO’s Department of Protection and Coordination.

Fruitful cooperation

Mr. Chen expressed satisfaction with and appreciation of the cooperation between WIPO and SIPO over past years. Indeed, China is not only a party to 15 WIPO-administered treaties but also a contributor to the development of the international intellectual property (IP) legal framework.

China successfully hosted a Diplomatic Conference on Audio-visual Performance in 2012 and the utilization of WIPOs global IP services– namely the PCT, Madrid and Hague Systems – is continually increasing.

Potential for IP protection growth

Mr. Chen explained that WIPO’s services could be more used by Chinese right holders in the country’s drive to go global. For example, WIPO databases, publications, statistics and alternative dispute resolution services could be made better use of by Chinese users. He highlighted that the WOC is committed to offering high-quality customer service to PCTMadrid and Hague System users in China.

Mr. Chen also introduced the theme of 2016 World IP Day and expressed confidence in the future development of creative industries in China.
