First Seminar on Intellectual Property with CNI

The National Confederation of Industry (CNI) and WIPO held CNI's first seminar on intellectual property on June 6. The event took place in São Paulo.

Participants discussed:

  • the roles of multilateralism and bilateralism in regard of intellectual property,
  • the recent measures to make the Brazilian industrial property system more efficient,
  • the use of knowledge protection by Brazilians abroad,
  • the creative industry, and
  • the future of intellectual property.

The audience included more than 120 entrepreneurs, attorneys, representatives from industry, public sector and research institutions.

José Graça Aranha, Regional Director of WIPO in Brazil, gave a brief history on the creation of the Patent Law Treaty (PLT), a treaty of basic procedures adopted in 2000 with the aim of harmonizing and streamlining formal procedures with respect to national and regional patent applications, and making such procedures more friendly to the users.

CNI highlights that IP and investments should go together

Carlos Eduardo Abijaodi, Director of Industrial Development at CNI, commented that, in this moment of crisis, IP and investments must go hand in hand. Asked about the impact of the delay in the trademark and patent examination for companies, Mr. Abijaodi did a detailed analysis of the current IP system. According to him, the uncertainty about the final decision of the examination generates problems for the depositor, the competitors and the society.

Measures to improve INPI's performance are presented during CNI's event

The president of INPI, Luiz Otávio Pimentel, presented the measures to improve the performance of the Institute. Only in the area of patents, in May, INPI had production growth of more than 80% in relation to April, according to Mr. Pimentel. However, he pointed out that, even with the improvements, the demand (31 thousand applications in 2016) will continue to exceed the operational capacity of the Institute. In the event, the INPI president also announced the Institute's expectation of meeting the requirements for joining the Madrid Protocol by the end of 2018.
