Lisbon Registry

The Lisbon Registry is responsible for administering the Lisbon System for the international registration of appellations of origin and geographical indications. Together, the Lisbon Agreement for the Protection of Appellations of Origin and their International Registration (‘the Lisbon Agreement’) and the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement on Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications (‘the Geneva Act’) form the Lisbon System.

Our activities include:

  • Maintaining the International Register recording international registrations effected under the Lisbon System, and data relating to such international registrations: this involves in particular the receipt, examination and registration of incoming international applications as well as declarations of refusal or invalidation issued by contracting parties to the Lisbon Agreement and/or the Geneva Act in respect of international registrations, but also modifications of registered data requested by the country of origin or contracting party of origin of the appellation of origin or geographical indication;
  • Notification of new registrations and other recordings in the International Register to the contracting parties concerned as well as publication of these data in the official Bulletin of the Lisbon System and in the Lisbon Express database on the WIPO website;
  • Maximizing efficiency under the procedures of the Lisbon System with the help of electronic tools;
  • Providing secretariat services in relation to the meetings of the Working Group on the Development of the Lisbon System;
  • Engaging in information and promotion activities concerning the Lisbon System and ensuring the adequate implementation of the treaties covered thereunder; and
  • Providing technical assistance, including legislative advice, capacity building activities, and conducting geographical indication development projects on the field for the benefit of interested WIPO Member States.
